Exclamation Cutting ridgeline on HH to free netting...

While I'll probably end up just having a zipper mod performed on my HH ULABP, someone else mentioned a ridgeline idea that got me thinkin'.

Say I "cut" (or just untie) the ridgeline and feed it through two tiny holes at each end of the bug netting. And then re-tie the ridgeline. This would cause the netting to collapse into the body of the hammock. However, it would provide side entry, gear access and most importantly (for me) fresh air blowing across my face (the primary reason why I take my tarp/bivy on solo trips) while I sleep on top of the netting.

If I were to need the netting, I could "clip" (or otherwise hang) it to the underside the ridgeline. I'd have to enter the hammock through the bottom like I do today, but that's not a big deal.

Anyone see an issues with idea? What could I use to clip/hang the netting from the ridgeline?

I just thought of one. If the netting is used (clipped to the underside of the ridgeline), you will not have access to the caddy or other items hanging from the ridgeline from inside the hammock.

You could cut the ridge line and use a biner or quick link to enable re-connecting it.

Instead of feeding it through the netting and making holes in the netting, just install a second, independent ridge line outside of the hammock that you can use when the netting is collapsed.

The netting on a HH is not nearly as wide as the hammock bed. So by collapsing the netting and laying on it you will reduce the effective width of the hammock. That might cause it lay differently.

Good catch. Looks like a zipper mod for me.

    Thanks.

If you don't need the netting, why not just take a cheap HAAB like an ENO or Treklite or TreeHugger instead of the HH? If you need the bug netting, then take the HH.

Most of my trips are shoulder season in the easter US (Mar--June, Oct--Dec), which means I often don't know if bugs are an issue until I get there.

Ex. 2 weeks ago I did ~50 miles on the NCT in ANF (PA). Bugs were an issue 1 out 3 nights. The other two nights I would have loved to have the netting rolled back so I could feel the fresh air on my face.

I would be concerned with laying on the netting and wearing holes in it.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

I've cut the ridgeline and later had the zipper mod done on my Hennessy. The zipper mod is well worth the money! If I had to do over I would not cut ridgeline and only have zipper mod done.

Happy Camper, where did you go to get that zipper installed?? I'd love to do that to my Hennessey.
