Yeti vs. Phoenix

But seriously.....I'm saving up for a winter UQ and I can't decide between the two.

Both are very similar in price:

Yeti: $215 vs. Phoenix: $219


The Yeti weighs 3oz less:

Yeti: 18.5oz vs. Phoenix: 21.5oz


Half of that difference comes from the down fill

Yeti: 10.5oz vs. Phoenix: 12oz




Anybody own both of them and want to chime in? They both seem like great choices, and have gotten great reviews from all you fine folks on HF

I own both. But phoenix is the zero degree. Each is their own charater. Yeti is my go to being phoenix is zero degree most of the time in nw ga the phoenix is too much insulation.

Other than that.
Length
The phoenix length works well for me as I am 63" tall. But I like the smaller size of yeti in my pack.

Setup
They both deploy really easy for me on a traveler or wbbb

Insulation
I'm a cold sleeper & used yeti with no footpad & 3 season burrow in 31* mild winds. Wearing hoodie socks & pants. Was warm. Have used yeti down to low mid 20* wth footpad and still fine.

If I had the 20* phoenix choosing between which to carry would factor on how far I'm hiking. & weather.

Solution. Buy both!

for me the biggest factor is + pack size + weight. Both quilts will keep you nice & warm.

it all depends on
- if you want to use footpad?
- is pack size & weight is a factor?

yeti has a little more fiddle factor but once you use it a few times it will just fall into place.

Is the Phoenix a larger quilt, covering more of you than the torso sized Yeti? If not, then it will likely be the warmer quilt due to the 1.5 oz of additional down. But if it is larger, much of that extra down will be used to fill the larger space, not really giving much extra loft.

So- if it is larger ( longer or wider) part of your decision will come down to deciding how much quilt coverage you want in your less than full size UQ. I have never tried an HG product, nor even a down Yeti, though I do have one of the original Climashield models, same size I believe(love this quilt). At 6'1" 205-220 lbs ( up and down every year), I have no trouble keeping covered with the Yeti, though some fetal positions probably push nit to the limit for coverage. Whatever is not covered from thighs down is just insulated by my leg pad.

So. Haveing used a Yeti sized UQ before and owning a Phoenix as well as a customized sized Phoenix this is MHO. The Phoenix is a 3/4 and the yeti is a 2/3. The Phoenix is 52L by 45W. Yeti is 46L by 40W. Both are going to be equally as warm the Phoenix has 1.5 oz more down to compensate for the bigger size. Obviously the Yeti packs smaller and is overall lighter but the Phoenix provides more coverage.

Now my first UQ was a winter Phoenix over the Yeti cause I wanted more coverage then the Yeti offered espically having broad shoulders. I used the stock dimensions of the Phoenix for three years and was always more then happy and enjoyed that the width of the Phoenix did not allow for cold spots in the shoulders. However as my addiction to gear grew and I started counting grams I wanted to go smaller. I tried out a 40W by 46 L UQ and found that my shoulders were cold and the UQ slipped off and would not stay in place. What to do what to do. So I did. With some ideas from a friend and talking to stormcrow I had him whip up a custom Phoenix 45W by 46L and got the best of both worlds. A lighter UQ that covered my shoulders but eliminated the extra length that my torso pad was covering anyways. It does not pack as small as a Yeti but certainly packs smaller then the stock dimensions of the Phoenix. I also had it made of 7D so the weight is comparable of that of the Yeti. I have a thread reviewing this quilt. So IMHO if you can get just one have stormcrow make you one 46L by 52W and get the best of both worlds.

If you go the hammock gear route they will make it with lighter materials if you prefer. My M50 20degree phoenix weighs 15.3 oz.
