Advice requested: 40* Incubator?

So, I want an UQ. Tried a HHSS and it just isn't working for me.

I'm also starting to count ounces a bit more in an effort to force my packweight down a bit.

I've been going back and forth between the lower weight of a 3/4 40* with possibly some extra down and if possible some cuben fabric or a full size.

The thinking: I want to be comfortable. After trying to dink around with the Super Shelter for about 5 hangs in pretty cold weather I'm not convinced. I don't want to invest serious money on a smaller quilt and then immediately regret that my head or feet or other part is cold.

Can any of you folks help out with some advice? Is a full size 40* with some cuben (if that's possible) and overfill going to keep me warm possibly in the 30's?

If you're the type of person that gets cold in a 30* bag at 40 then I say go for the 20* 3/4 length and use a sit pad made of CCF for your feet. If on the other hand you are toasty warm in a 40* bag in 20* temps then the 40* 3/4 should be plenty warm for you, but again use a CCF pad under your feet.

And yes I believe Adam is willing to add cuben to his quilts.

even if your weight conscious, comfort and no dinking around is the route i'd go. its my opinion that a 40* with 2 oz overfill would handle the 30's - i've found hg's ratings to be padded.

the incubator is set & forget once dialed in, and by the time you add the weight of a pad, and the hassle of keeping it in place--- well, you get it.

adam will build most anything from anything... give a him a ring and chat... he's usually more than willing to workshop ideas if he's able to get away from his quilt building machine.

I agree with what rip said: if you're not interested in dinking around, go with the full-length incubator underquilt.

Adam just made me a custom 30° incubator. As with all his gear, it's awesome.

Give them a call and see what they can do for you.

Where you will save weight and bulk is in the top quilt. Not being cold from underneath, in my experience, means that a sweater and an HG 40F rated top quilt does me fine at 25F. That's just 16oz!!

Mind you, a warm hand slid beneath the top quilt finds it cool, but with back and sides fully insulated, the sweater (and hat and hood) have me entirely comfortable with that little well-draped and tucked top quilt.

Don't scrimp on the UQ. And figure out what keeps your feet warm and dry in the hammock. Loose fluffy wool socks? Everyone is different here.

With Rip Waverly, I'm still trying to figure out this sit pad thing. I think I have it carved to just the right size, now, narrower than before, and scored to be more flexible. For sure, you must keep your feet from conducting heat to the hammock. They will chill as surely as your butt will freeze in winter sitting with just a layer of fabric between it and an aluminum bleacher bench.

I hope so. Paid the invoice. Now it's just a waiting game.

I need to time out when to sell my HHSS. Will probably wait a week . . .

Nice choice.
I just put my M50 orders in with Adam too.

I think full length is the way to go. With the additional setup intrinsic with hammocks...I.e. tarp, angles, etc....you can get you UQ on the hammock, hop in, and be warm with nothing to fuss with.
