Newb from GA

Hello all, been camping for as long as I can remember, just started hiking a few years ago. Absolutely newb meat as far as hanging. I purchased an ENO DN for fun a few years back. Never really used it much except in the backyard. My son joined Cub Scouts, of which I am now the Cub Master, and some of the Eagle Scout dad's are using hammocks. So, I thought I would give it a try. I currently have the ENO DN, bugfly, and dry fly rain tarp. All of which was purchased before I found this site . My first attempt in the hammock will be this weekend at a Scout camp. I appreciate all the information, but there is so much to read. My main concern is being cold. I do not have an underquilt. My plan was to use my sleeping pad in the hammock and sleeping bag on top of that. After reading more, I think I may fashion an underquilt of some sort using a tarp for this weekend and then research some more before I DIY one or purchase. Any thoughts?

Welcome from Indiana. Many hammockers use pads and sleeping bags. An underquilt is not necessary, but definitely better than a pad. There are many DIY threads in the Do-It-Yourself section. An underquilt can be made from an old sleeping bag on the cheap. Look in the Bottom Insulation section and you'll see ideas for pads and underquilts.

Welcome aloft, and good luck with the campout this weekend. If you have a poncho liner, that can help if you rig in under your hammock. If I was closer to you, I'd lend you an UQ & TQ.

Hello and Welcome to the Forums from Canada! Scott's diy insultex UQ at DIYgearsupply.com is a great little project for not much money if you are inclined to try that path. Otherwise pads are great way to get hammocking quickly!

You made a good choice choosing an ENO DN as your camping hammock...they are so incredibly comfy.

I use a ENO DN as my camping hammock too. Depending on what the nightly lows are expected to be, you could do just fine with a pad and sleeping bag; thats what I use. I lay on the pad and drape the sleeping bag over me like a quilt. Even when the mercury dips into the 50s I am fine.

Plenty of people prefer pads to UQs. But if you would like an UQ for the weekend a PLUQ can be put together quickly and for relatively cheap. Poncho liners can be purchased at most Military surplus stores and shock cord can be had at REI, or you can dismantle at shock cord cargo net sold at most home improvement stores. Good luck on your first hang and rest comfortably knowing that in the morning you won't be crawling out of a tent on hands and knees thinking that you're getting too old for this.
