Sewn thru Karo step

Anybody ever made a sewn thru karo step UQ for summer? It seems way easier than a sewn thru with channels. Am I not seeing something in my thinking?

not a 100% sure what you're meaning when you say "sewn thru karo step uq"

i have made a karo step quilt and a sewn through channeled quilt, and the sewn through channel quilt was MUCH easier than the karo step quilt

i have not made a Karo step but sewn through is mreo of a pain in the butt to make then a baffled quilt IMO
it's more sewing but the baffles are worth it

I made one, still have it. I will say that all in all it is easier and much faster than making a baffled quilt, though slower than making a sewn though in the style of a baffled quilt. I put 8 ounces of 900 in it and stayed warm at the low 40's....of course 8 ounces of 900 in a baffled quilt would be good to the mid 20's. The problem I found is that you end up with a lot of volume inside a karo sewn though...you have 2 options to counter that A) you create a fairly tight sewn though grid to prevent down shifting or B) looser grid and fill the volume with enough down to prevent any shifting. Problem with A is that you have more thin spots that are uninsulated, problem with B is you quickly start adding more weight than your saving. Last summer for my trip down to Arizona we made up a sewn through layer out like a traditional baffled quilt, used 5 ounces of 800 and was great down to 45 or so with a similarly designed sewn though top quilt.

I still have the sewn though but we opened it up and removed the down so now it's just any empty shell that would be usable for anyone that would want to add down and a few stitches to close it back up. I'd let it go cheap for anyone that wants to experiment.

Baffled quilts are MUCH easier. I've made both the common straight channels and karo step with baffles and if I had to pick, I'd say the straight channels are a bit easier. But there are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Can you explain a little more why the sewn through is such a pain? I haven't done either yet so just curious

I am just refering to making a sewn through quilt with the karo pattern to create one big compartment rather than multiple channels. Was your karo quilt baffled or sewn through?

Say $35 shipped for the shell with the cords to hang it.

fabric shifting around .... if it shifts just a little the quilt will be off
i had to rip out a few seams doing a sewn through... i just found sewing baffles much easier yes it's more sewing but there is no guessing
