    Newbie from Montana... Maybe...

    Hey,
I am looking at getting into backpacking and enjoying great outdoors sans car and was considering a new lightweight tent setup but after reading about hammocks and how comfy they are I am seriously looking into it. My only concern is feeling a bit claustrophobic inside a hammock.
I made my own quilt this past year because I don't like the confinement of a bag and after using it a couple of days ago in the cold and snow in my old 1 man tent I was thinking that life might be more enjoyable with a better nights sleep.

Thanks for all the great information on this site.

    Jon

Welcome Neighbor. There are some easy solutions for the claustrophobic feeling, an open top hammock would be an option to consider. Even with a bug net added they will feel roomier than a hammock with an integrated net.

Howdy neighbor. Great to have another Montana hanger. One of the great things about hammocking with a tarp is the variety of setups you can have. You can make it as open as weather allows so you probably wont have any claustrophobia issues.

Welcome to the forums; from Ohio. Sounds like getting off the ground is just what you need. I don't feel claustrophobic at all in mine. As a matter of fact, I love the openness of it when the weather permits to have the tarp higher.

What he said when it's nice out it's great to open up the tarp and be able to look out into the woods

Yeah, if I lived in Montana I wouldn't want to be laying on the ground.
I vacationed out there a few years ago. Went hiking in the painted canyon and saw a rattle snake with a head about as big as a baseball. Ut Uh! Don't sleep on the ground in Montana.
