    Tree strap sliding down tree

Is it normal for the strap to slide down the tree a little when I get in the hammock? Sleeping in this in a couple hours and am a little uneasy.

I did remove the double wrap and went to a single. It's a little better but still slides a little.

Not at all normal but that strap looks very thin. I use the 1" straps and I've never had one slip. It also appears the distance from the hammock to the tree may be too close and causing a steep angle where the hammock is pulling straight down on the suspension. Lastly it looks like that tree bark has been worn down and has become slick.

I think your loop should be centered or farther to the right of center as looking at the picture. That cinches it tighter.

TrailSlug, it is pulling down at a steep angle.
XJ35S, it is coming straight off tree for less strain on hardware, but I use grapplers hitch--and can choke the tree better without fear--so far anyway!
We've all had something or other while hanging--good luck...

That picture makes it look like the angle is much steeper than the normal 30 degree angle.

If just the two strap ends coming off the tree slip down a little, no problem. If the entire strap the full circumference or the tree slips, that's not good.

You said you were in the hammock a couple of hours. Did the strap continue to slip or did it just slip a little as you first weighted the hammock as the straps cinched up and got a bite?

Your original double wrap of the strap should have been a more secure connection.

Also, having the strap come off more towards one side of the tree as in your photo is a correct way to reduce stress on the strap from the connecting hardware.

If that's not a 1" strap, it's time to get some as has been stated.

It only came down when I sat in it. I just checked and it is 1" dutch straps. As trialslug mentioned, I think the trees were too close.

Thankfully when I redid the strap it held the night!

Thank you all for the info!
