    Hanging from studs

I decided to switch out my bed for the Eno DN. Eventually, I would like to make a stand of some sort for portability, but I'm not sure which of the examples found on the forums would work best. So for now I have just mounted hardware into the studs of the walls. In the pic you can see that I have mounted one hook and one eye-bolt per side.

My thinking is that the hook would support 1/2 the weight (vertically) and the eye-bolt would handle the horizontal force of 1/2. And the total weight would be distributed rather than on one single point.

Just looking for comments/suggestions/cautions on my math and understanding.

I use the "I" bolt in the stud. Works fine. You will see folks on here over engineering things, but good construction practices will work fine.

+1 for the i bolts oh and did I mention I'm 290ish. I didn't realize it until I bought some that I bolts come in weight ratings. Just make sure It's weighted properly.

Your upper hook may fail unexpectedly. The EYE bolt is all you will need.

Your upper hook is not designed for body support, imo.
The full turn of an eye hook works best. If you can find them, the eye hooks that have welded or forged eyes are better. Prevents the eye from opening under load.

Attaching that far down on the wall is asking for a lot of deflection in the wall stud and possible cracking of wall board, though I do agree with the distributed load concept. I think you'll be okay.

    Good luck,

I'd say that all of the load is still on the top hook, minus a small amount for friction through lower eye. The lower eye will be subject to forces of its own because it is pulling the strap over, but these will be in addition to the starting load on the hook. The set up does make sure that the load on the hook is straight down so there's only shear loading in the fixing bolts rather than any pull out forces which is a good thing. Figuring out loads and forces in these situations isn't always straight forward and you can lose the will to live, so I would advise that you expect them to be greater than you think and make sure you check the eye and hook regularly for any signs of trouble. I think you'll be ok though.

Hanging from wall studs is one of the more controversial subjects brought up on these forums. Some folks say they have never had any problems. Others, including myself have seen structural damage done to the walls. I don't like the practice because of my own experience, but then again, I can't argue with the reported success that others claim to have had. My concern is the damage is often hidden and can fail suddenly and catastrophically. Be careful and use your own judgement.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

So the consensus here seems to be that a simple adequately rated eye bolt screwed into a normal wall stud is plenty strong enough to hold, even with heavier hangers? I guess if this many people have done it long term with no problems, it must be.

    But, I am surprised.
