    Neck pain and pillow issues

Does anyone here experience neck discomfort while lying in a hammock? Do you use pillows and if so what do you use?

I never had these issues with my Hennesy Asym, but any other hammock I will experience neck discomfort especially if I am not using a thick air pad under my head.

I usually don't have neck pain even without a pillow, but this past weekend I did not bring my usual pillow and I sure missed it the first night. I have been putting my down vest in a stuff sack to use as a pillow and that works well for me. I did have an inflateable ultralight pillow (the kind you blow up with a straw) the second night and that did ok, but it sure made a lot of noise. (crackle crackle).

I don't need much, but I do like to have something. Extra clothes in a stuff sack are too lumpy for me.

I find I really need something, though something small, under my neck because the whole weight of my head hits in one place. like a single spot on my head without it. Mule

I don't get neck pain from any of my hammocks, but I understand that it can be common for some. You might look into one of the inflatable pillows, specifically the inflatable horseshoe* shaped ones seem nice for hammock use.

I do sometimes use a pillow under my knees in the hammock.

*I'm not advocating the vendor in that link, only providing an example.*

I have a Hennessy A-sym and have not experienced neck pain but I always use a pillow. Car camping I take a little camping pillow. Backpacking I made a little cotton pillow case with velcro and stuff whatever I have on hand into it. I tried those little inflatable pillows from Backpacking Light but didn't like it under my head, instead used it under my knees, which was nice. I gave one of the inflatable pillows to a friend and he really liked it.

A water wing (a child's swimming floatie) makes a cheap, light, and quiet neck pillow. Cut through the noninflatable part so it lays flat. Mine is 1.5 ounces. I've used it at home and in the car, too.

I've tried that, but it was uncomfortable unless I put some sort of material over it to keep from sticking to it (plus the plastic smells pretty strongly until it gets broken in a bit) ...maybe I picked up the wrong kind?

Nah, that's the right kind. It definitely needs airing out before use, and some sort of small pillowcase. Sorry I didn't mention those things.

Extract the kids arm first too. Otherwise you can really get a skanky smell.

I have a stuff sack that is fleece on the inside and silnylon on the outside. It carries my kitchen in my pack, but once I setup camp, I turn the sack inside out so the fleece is on the outside and stuff it with the stuff sacks for my gear (so I won't loose them) and extra clothing until I get the proper firmness. Instant pillow.
