    Hello from the Triad NC

Hello everyone. I first wanted to say Thank You for all the great information. I have been lurking around for a while. Now time to get involved.

I just purchaed a GT Skeeter Beeter UL and then ordered the Whoopie kit and ARL from AHE. Very excited!!!

I have been wanting to hang for a while now and decided to jump in. I have hiked plenty and did a solo hike in part of Linville Gorge last year with a tent. So excited to take another trip there in the very near future with my new hammock.

I plan on taking the gear listed as well as my sleeping back and Army poncho liner for UQ. My question is should I just fold the liner and lay on it with the bag or make it a DIY and add some lines to the liner and hang it under? I wanted to make sure I deal with the warmth and condensation factor.

    Thanks as always guys!

Welcome aboard. There is a gathering of the Gorge Rats the last week of May in the big ditch, hope you can make it.

welcome to the madness from down on the coast.

Laying on top of the poncho liner and or sleeping bag will compress it too much for it to add any insulating value unless it is warm outside. The poncho liner would work better as a UQ. Many hangers on the forum have converted a poncho liner for use as a UQ. Just keep in mind it will probably work best for 45+ degrees (if I remember the reports corrrectly) Recommend you do a test hang to see how your setup will work. Different setups for different temps and weather conditions. I use my poncho liners as a TQ in warm weather or as an add on to my cold weather TQ in colder weather

Welcome from just south of W-S.
I think you'll find lots more places to hang that hammock in Linville Gorge than you could pitch a tent, & be waaaay more comfortable
Hopefully some others more familiar with using the poncho liner can help you with your question.
If the temperatures are pretty mild, you might do OK just laying on it I think.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!! I am very excited to see where I can hang it in the Gorge. And I do hope to check out some of the get togethers.

I appreciate the info too. It should be 45+ when I go, so maybe for weight sake, I skip my heavy sleeping bag, use my existing liner as a TQ and get me another for UQ and modify it.

I will test everything in the coming weeks. Maybe some of the local parks or Pilot Mt.
