Huggers too short - now what

We were out over the week end and I wanted to hang my son close so we could share my tarp for wind protection and a little more warmth. The first set of three trees we found were perfectly spaced, but the common tree was too big for his tree hugger/whoopie with Dutch clip suspension.

It wasn't a big deal as just a few minutes later we spotted another set of three trees that worked out fine.

However, what happens if all the trees are too big? I was thinking about using some spare Amsteel I carry to extend his huggers before we found the second set of trees.

Anyone had this happen before? Thoughts on other solutions?

    Thanks,
    Peter

I carry a couple Amsteel continuous loops for this reason alone.

I've used a piece of amsteel about 4' long with a locked brummel on each end to larkshead to the end of my hugger and extend the part that doesn't contact the tree. I carry 2 pieces like that, they've also come in handy extending my tarp ridgeline, extra length for guylines etc. long story short it's a rare trip I don't use them somewhere.

I have a continuous loop and 2 different sized extenders, all made of 7/64 amsteel, in case I need the extra length. So far I've had no need for them, but I figure better to have and not need than need and end up sleeping on the ground.

Dutch's Whoopie Hook system plays nicely in this scenario. In fact, I believe he designs or intends that the Whoopie Hook be used on shorter than normal straps and longer amsteel line.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll turn some of my extra AmSteel into some useful pieces today!

Ive got a piece of amsteel with two fixed brummels as well as a spare piece of webbing. The dutch clips are meant for webbing only (according to the JRB site) so I just tie the extra length of webbing onto the tree strap that I need to lengthen (instead of using the amsteel) and I'm good to go.

i don't like carrying anything that has limited uses. i'd much prefer to carry a few feet of mule tape, and be able to use it for a variety of things if needed.

I carry a 15' length of Climbing tape just for situations like this. Also I understand that some people don't want to carry extra weight. But cordage is a prime survival tool to have handy. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. My Normal suspension is 7.5' tree straps with 16' whoopies. Trees can be scarce in some of my areas. But they can also be huge. So I can combine the 2 treestraps on one end and break out the 15 footer for the other.
