How would a Tyvek 9x12 tarp compare to the guide gear 12x12 as far as weight and pack size? I don't have a Tyvek tarp, but thinking about getting one if it is lighter and packs smaller than a guide gear.

If anyone is planning on ordering more than $100 worth of stuff from Bargain Outfitters I have a coupon for $10 off good for today only, just shoot me a PM.
If you are not familiar with this tarp, search "Guide Gear" in the Gallery and you'll see lots of photos of this tarp from HF members. You'll see it pitched different ways, close-ups of the added-on center tie outs, modified guy lines, etc. Good times!

A bare 9 x12 piece of Tyvek should weigh in ~ 25.5 oz before adding tieouts or anything. The Guide Gear 12x12 is ~30 oz. Below is a comparison shot of 2 9x6 pieces of tyvek wrapped up together as if it were a 9x12, a GG12 tarp, & a 2 liter. The tyvek is brand new and would be difficult to wrap that tightly every time. The versatility and coverage of the GG12 wins out over the minor weight/volume savings of the tyvek for me.
Disclaimer: this is the old GG12 tarp. I'm assuming that there have been no changes in the new version, but we all know what happens when we assume...
Thanks for the pic and info, that is what i needed to know.
CHECK YOUR TARP SIZE when you get it.
I don't have an immediate use for this tarp and planned on setting it aside for now, but thought it felt a little light so I weighed it....23oz including guylines, aluminum stakes and the pretty pink "Little Princess" stuff sack the lines and stakes were in.
I decided I better hang it up and have a look. They sent me a 9'x9' (actual 8'5"x8'5") that is not even listed on the site instead of the 12'x12'.
Just great....now I have to mess around with returning it. I guess I'll send the cr@p binoculars back and cancel my "Buyer's Club" while I'm at it.
UH OH!!! This does not bode well. Has anyone else received theirs yet? This, coupled with the green color and the fact that there is no 9x9 listed, makes me wonder if they aren't ALL 9x9...
Major buzz-kill
Someone please post when you receive yours and report. Thanks!
P.S.: I just scanned all thirteen pages of this thread. @ post #111, member received his and set it up. He didn't say anything about the size being wrong, so maybe we're okay.
Still, sucks for Gemcutter!

Aw now...I bet if you call em back and tell them about their mistake they will make up to ya without any cost to you. Who knows who ever the handler was for your order might have been having a bad day and switched yours for someone elses. The princess pink color made me laugh.
If I get mail today it will be a miracle...I live in Nascar territory (Bristol area) and the race is in town.
