My mom let me borrow a sewing machine that used to belong to my grandmother, so we don't have a manual. The model number is 385-12714090. Anyone have a source for free manuals? I'd rather not pay $20 for the few basic pieces of info that I'll need.

Who made the machine...
If the machine is threaded study the routing carefully and duplicate it with the thread you want to use. If the bobbin is inserted the same thing applies.
If that is not the case, the top thread usually follows are reasonably intuitive route. The bobbin is a little more problematic... but still has only a few options. The thread either comes off the top or the bottom and threads through a tension spring. Try it one way... if the you get a lousy bobbin stitch... or the thread continually breaks, try it the other.
Check how the bobbin is wound. Usually it unwinds the same way in the bobbin case.

I'd check E-bay for manuals, or for that matter, just google the manual.

Thanks Thomas. I think I'll end up downloading the manual because I can't seem to get the bobbin threaded correctly (I did once, but can't remember how!) and I'm sick of wasting thread.
what's the problem with the bobbin? have you tried having the bobbin feed from the other direction?
it either feeds from the bottom toward you or the top toward you. If one doesn't work, try the other. If the bobbin is veritical there is usually a sizable gap in the bobbin case that goes on top and usually some kind of indexing tab that seats the bobbin properly.

Bobbin Tension - A Personal Viewpoint
Well compared to the first sewing machine I used, which belonged to my sister, the bobbin on this beast works a bit differently. I've tried quite a few different setups but it just jams up each time. I'm sick of playing with it and the $8 for a complete manual PDF is probably worth it to me, just in case I have any other problems that I can't figure out.
I have an old Kenmore too. This site has free threading diagrams, I wasn't able to find my exact model but they had a model number close enough to figure it out from.
