I have to agree, having two seperate hammocks just hanging next to each other is probably the safest and most comfortable way to go. I was also toying this different shapes and designs so my wife and I could hang together. However, we would have had to lay in 2 different diagnals to get flat, otherwise we were bumping into each other all night, and not in a good way!

What if you used some sort of closed foam pad instead of spreader bars on a bridge hammock? You build the padding/underinsulation into the system, and save on the weight of the bars?

I think at that point it might be lighter to try and build a portaledge. Which I've thought about, but seems like more trouble, and money, then It's worth.
