    Bivy Sack

This past summer I was on the road for a month and decided to only carry my hammock to see how well I could do, however, sometimes you just gotta make it a bivy.

Funny enough I knew it was going to be a bit cooler at 9,200' but I didn't think it would freeze over. I just cuddled my arms in a bit tigher. Ha! But who can complain when you wake to this?

That day I covered 360 or so miles over 7 passes almost entirely in the dirt so I pulled in well after dark and couldn't find a proper hang. Yes, the view was definitely a pleasant surprise when I woke. There was an RV not too far away where I saw a woman with a large lens on her camera taking photos of my set up as I hopped around trying to get dressed and warm up.

Prior to this ride I've spent an disproportional amount of time in the desert where hang options can be few and far between so I would normally carry a Big Anges Copper Spur UL2 tent: https://www.bigagnes.com/Products/De...perspurul22012. So when I packed for this trip I also carried the footprint from that tent specifically should I have to bivy to provide some additional protection to the hammock. I don't use any sort of under quilt and instead use a NeoAir Treker: http://cascadedesigns.com/therm-a-re...rekker/product (although it looks like there's a new model out with over twice the R value for the same weight and packed size that I'll have to swap to: http://cascadedesigns.com/therm-a-re...season/product) and a Mountain Hardware Phantom 32 sleeping bag: http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Phan...efault,pd.html. Had I realized how cold it was going to get that night I probably would had worn wool socks and my down hooded sweater as well. Otherwise it slept just fine. Tied one end of the hammock to the picnic table and the other end to my handle bars.

This is my only fear, stuck with no trees but it is nice to see how easily my hammock could be used as a bivy

Great pic, good to know you can go to the ground.

Course if theres a way to pull the bike over on myself I'd find it.

Thanks for sharing. Sorry you had to go to ground, but you made it work, and waking up to that view is well worth it.
