I lost a tree to trenching... installed lawn irrigation, which cut 6' from a small pepper tree... The next winter storm that came through took out the tree...

Since there were other downed trees around, I bet that tree was imperceptibly storm damaged already. I don't think you killed that tree.
If my memory serves me about tree roots. 90% of a trees roots are in the top 18" of the soil.

The last trip I made on my motorcycle, I camped in a USFS campground on the East side of Sonora Pass near the USMC Mountain Warfare School.
I hung between two Aspen trees, both about 10" in diameter. As soon as I got into the hammock one of the trees just about bent in half leaving me sitting on the ground.
Found another set of trees. Decided to go on a diet!
