    Guilty pleasures

I was unpacking my stuff and took note of several things I'll leave behind on my next outing. I had three piles... Keep, Leave, and Maybe...

One item in my Maybe pile that made it back to my Keep pile was a a HUGE pillow that, when rolled up is almost as big as a small sleeping bag. It's massive. Problem... I can't bear to leave it. The thing is comfortable. I sort of felt like Linus Van Pelt from Peanuts does about his blanket. If I were on a long outing with lots of walking, it would go, in all earnestness. But I can make room for it in my kayak. It's really worth it.

Anyway, here is a photo with a small hammock and a remote for scale. Just curious what other folks will "admit" to taking as a guilty pleasure.

Before my enlightenment, I would haul this 3.5" sleep pad from REI. **** thing weighed in at like 5lbs, but **** I slept good on it. In fact, trying to get lighter and rid of it was the reason I got into hammocks. Now, my one guilty pleasure is this REI tripod trail stool I carry. It's only 1lb, but to me it beats sitting on rocks and logs.

Lightweight hiking is a weight/level of comfort balance. If it helps ya enjoy the hike, it's worth the weight.

My guilty trail pleasure -discount used books.

Guiltier trail pleasure - using them for kindling.

There is something almost decadent about sitting in camp on a wet morning, reading ahead so you'll have lots of kindling that night - or even just sitting by the fire, tearing and tossing in the pages when you're done to lighten the load.

Feel free to laugh at me, but try it sometime...

Water sandals (currently teva zilch's), a tiny bit too much first aid stuff (see enough trauma in your life and it becomes more real than a "what if") and, going with the water sandals,... too much fishing stuff. Native brookies can be soooo finicky, and I do keep it to a minimum.... by my standards.

I think everyone has something they dont really "need" but cant bear to part with. Mine is a big heavy maxpedition bottle holder that is completely unnecessary. But it keeps my water nice and cool in the florida heat. And it looks cool.

glock entrenching tool. Never know when a war might break out and you need a good trench. Or when you might just have to take a dump.

    my pack

The biggest thing a can't part with is my bag. It's a Gregory base camp bag. Fully water proof, no frame, and heavy. I just can't seem to part with it.

My bear canister. It is far from light, but it keeps me from dealing with the frustrations of hanging a bag and then realizing that I forgot to get something out of it or put something in it. It's also great for piece of mind against rodents, birds and anything else that wants any of my yummy stuff while I'm in the woods. It also makes a nice stool/table in camp.
