    Roan Highlands

I am planning to do a trip from Carver's Gap to 19E the weekend of June 8th-10th. Does anyone have suggestions on leaving a car at 19E. I understand they have had problems with vandalism there in the past but it seems I've read somewhere that there is a hostel where it is safe to park vehicles. I am doing this with a backpacking group but anyone is welcome to join. Really appreciate any advise.

We are hitting Roan with a big group but we are hiking Carvers Gap to Iron mtn gap but the parking at Bearswallow Gap I think is the one with the trouble.

It is a chance you take when leaving a car any where along the trail or river. As a fishing guide mine has been broke into a couple times on the river. Nothing you can do. I use to worry about it but now I just have good insurance and take every thing out of the car leave nothing. I found out the hard way that a lot of insurance only covers $300 in electronics that won't replace some cell phones. Mine will cover damage to the car or theft of the car. The wife does shuttles for all the fishermen on the Watauga river here in Elizabethton. So she keeps a eye out for any thing that looks out of place. She also does a few shuttles for trail hikers any where between roan and Holston mountain.

Just read this off a website. Do not park your car on US 19-E overnight. This is the intersection with Bear Branch. This author has seen more than one car broken into, smashed or burned. Inquire at homes below Bear Branch Rd for parking. Parking is relatively safe at Carvers Gap. I hope this helps I got it off of Summit post.

I appreciate the response. I got in touch with the Mountain Harbour Hostel and they said we could leave vehicles there for a $5 dollar charge. Much rather pay to park and not have to worry. Thanks again for the advise.

I've driven a few times from southeast GA (Savannah area). I use I-26 to Asheville and then the temporary/future I-26 north of Asheville to the Johnson City/Elizabethton, TN area. I turn off in Elizabethton to catch US 19 east to the Roan area. Puts you right at Mountain Harbor on the way up the mountain to the AT crossing. This is most direct route for me

I did this section 2 weeks ago, you can park your car there for $5 a day, like you said, also they have an amazing breakfast, just get there at 7:30 AM if you can. I did the 5 or miles to Overmountain Shelter on Saturday, and then Sunday the 8 or so to Mountain Harbor. You can also leave you car at Carvers Gap, there are usually alot of cars there on the weekends and I did not worry about it. Mountain Harbor charges $35 flat rate no matter how many people to give you a lift back to Carvers Gap. Its a great section to do, PM me if you want more details.

Thanks for the advise guys. I'm still undecided on the route. I may do Rockdawg's route or I may go up 221. The problem with going up 221 is it takes by the Linville Gorge. Really hard to go by the Gorge without stopping...

US 221. I remember that road! Nice scenery. All day drive to get anywhere.
