    New DIY Bridge Hammock

I use quest poles too. One pole setup is a 3 piece and the other is a 2 piece.

I would like to use hiking poles not only for the weight issue, but also the space issue. One of these days I'll have the time to do a hiking pole mod that I like and trust.

How long is your three-piece pole? I've never dared try one; I have always feared that 2 connections would be even more prone to failure than one connection (granted, I've never had one of the Quest poles fail on me).

They are right at 13.75" each including tips. I calculated each cut so that when that are separated they are the same length, but when they are together they equal 36".

I have not tested it, but I believe the 3 piece is stronger than the 2 piece since more of the pole is thicker due to the connections.

FWIW...the Warbonnet Ridgerunner uses a 3 piece ~0.625" x 39.5" spreader bar on the head end. The middle section is 4", giving you a choice of lengths.

What about bamboo? I was going to make some bamboo hiking poles out of some bamboo replacement broom handles I picked up for $4, they could pull double duty as my spreader bars also

Teedee has used bamboo, though not as dual use items....

You might be interested in this thread: Adjustable Bamboo Hiking Poles/ Spreader Bars for Bridge Hammock

SoCal Mike did something very similar; made double duty bamboo hiking poles/spreaders. Some good ideas in there.

I guess the wire nut must have been slightly off center or maybe just too much force or both.

IMO - now to use a hiking pole the wire nut deal is not safe unless you are lightweight and IMO it needs to have a different tip style or a different adapter so the bearing is on the aluminum shaft and not concentrated on the very tip.

It broke exactly at the end of the alum shaft.

It snapped down unfortunately and shot through my hammock, but its repairable.

It did not damage the webbing/tip holder.
It did not bend the trekking pole.

    Shot off like a rocket.
Good thing nobody was standing there, well maybe the X would have been a plus.

That is the exact same place my leki poles broke .To fix this i pulled the second and third section of pole out . Now I use an insert coupling(also origional) with a piece of the origional ridge runner spreader bar ,it slides right in,giving you the origional ends with the top section of pole in the middle .now you can slide a section of the origional spreader bar over the outside diamiter of the second section to creat the foot end spreader bar from one pole, saving the weight of the second hiking pole if you wish.

Yeah, that sounds like an interesting idea -- I'm envisioning a "hidden" dowel inside my hiking pole where I'd just take the top section off and stick it in. Usually when I envision things I'm way off from the actual implementation people have come up with
