In our quest to see if the NY Catskill devil is more gangsta than our Jersey Devil, Russ and I took a weekend to hunt in in the Devil's Acre. Sigh. No devil, but ICE, ICE, and SNOW as soon as you hit 3400 feet. Microspikes were required. The temperature at the trailhead was 78 degrees and the ice along the ridge line felt like a refrigerator car. SLICK!!!!
At 3500 feet you saw a mixture of mud, snow, ice and a lean-to to eat in. We met two NYC natives from Queens and turned them on to the joys of hammock camping. They Iphone checked out the Warbonnet Blackbird!
Russ enjoyed a dinner of Hawk Vittles (North African Stew...mmmm), dark German chocolate, and Irish Whiskey! (The REAL spelling of Whiskey) The midges were tolerable but may get worse if it stays warm and wet. The four of us sat watching Jupiter and Venus in the night sky (cause we are all way to close to Manhatten to see any night sky otherwise, and enjoyed the night lights).
Russ and I love the Catskills. I've done the AT from PA to the Kennebec River in Maine, but my heart is in the Catskills (all due to Dirty Dancing I think!) You get solitude, elevation, and local color.
Hope you all enjoy the pictures and by all means, visit the Catskills. They need the tourism.
