If you can't make a lifesaver fire or shelter quickly, you have no business outside in the arctic, especially around frozen lakes or rivers.
    Always plan your next move.
Cuts take ages to heal up out there and blood flows very quickly out of cuts.
Never put anything down that could be lost under snowfall. 5 minutes will cover anything.
Wet cold around freezing point is by far the hardest temps to deal with. Synthetics/wool rule at these temps. Cotton clothing/ mulkuks great below -10.
    Sounds like a great trip!!!
I realy like what you listed above and couldn't agree more with you.
I think that wet cold is by far the most dangerous temps.
Looking forward to your gear reports.

Thanks Fourdog I headed your advice on clothing before travelling and it stood me well. Everything was reaffirmed by my experiences and our instructors. Bring on the -40 trip with no sleeping bag, I'm hungry for it now

That was a great adventure. Great report and pics

The things you noted as learned, needed, and not needed, should be remembered by all who travel and camp in the cold.

I also agree it is far harder to stay warm and dry at 30 degrees than it is at -20f.

Now I Have the bug for that roll up toboggan gonna have to look into that for next season.

Awesome trip report and pics! Thanks! We should all do that sort of post-mortem of what worked, what didn't, and what to take next time - from ANY outing! That is how to learn your gear, your abilities, and refine the system.

    Thanks again!

Roll-on winter 2013! Any help I can give about using the thinner stuff is no problem.

    Glad you enjoyed it.

Its been good to examine the trip, weve all been doing it on Bushcraft UK where the trip was organized from. It took a lot of forethought on kit as we were in as close to a survival situation as it was possible for us to be placed in and it was no walk in the park.

    Thanks 4

I'd recommend it to anybody who enjoys winter camping. I'm a lot happier about being out in adverse conditions and new friendships were cemented round the campfire.

Seems like a nice trip even though the weather sometimes seemed to be not so good.

It´s a nice area you went to, I´ve been to Dividalen Nationalpark once in the summer. It was in the late 90´s but I wish I could go back there soon.

    Thanks for sharing!

Seriously, Skahow 2013 is looking likely for me. I'm happy to share what skills I picked up but you guys probably know a lot of it, it seems to be in your blood

I'm glad it bought back some memories for you Stavros. Its a stunning place, stark and unforgiving with a change in character every half hour we were there. I want to see more of of it too, preferably on skis being towed by a dog this time
