Left Friday morning for a 3 day backpacking trip on the American Discovery Trail. This section is the northern leg across Illinois, also known as the Hennepin Canal Trail, which is also part of the Grand Illinois Trail. I have uploaded more pictures in an album that are quite interesting, although they did not all load in order. I parked my truck at Lock#3, which is 1.9 miles west of the Illinois River at Bureau and headed west towards Iowa. I was not sure where I would get off the trail, but my wife Rhonda was going to pick me up somewhere when I called in. We live a couple of hours south of the trail and I told my wife I would go until Sunday morning or so. She picked me up at the Annawan crossing at the 34.6 mile mark. The weather was to be stormy but I never saw a drop of rain during my backpacking adventure this weekend. This canal was built for mules to pull barges from the Illinois River to the Mississippi River but was obsolete by the time it was finished, great historical canal if you research it.
