types of carabiners

hi guys been wanting to try out a system of hooking the hammock to the trees using carabiners but which type of carabiner should I use? and how big or what load would be enough so that I wont get a crash fall? and at the same time what carabiners do you use? thanks

you need climbing grade carabinersbut that doesnt mean you need the heaviest duty ones.

Any biner rated for climbing is fine. There are a couple of 'our' vendors that offer biners; Warbonnet and Trek Light both sell lightweight biners that can be used with the hammock's suspension. Or, you can go all fancy and get yourself some Dutch Clips at Jacks R Better.

Otherwise, just look for something that is rated for climbers and you'll be fine. I use many different brands and designs; haven't had that part of my setup fail me yet.

you could also always go the toggle route

+1 on the climbing carabiner. Just buy the lightest cheapest climbing grade biner and you will be fine. Just make sure it was designed to carry human weight.

Have you considered making some soft shackles? I made new suspensions for my new hammock and converted to soft shackles. I had some left over length s and made 5 soft shackles for my tree huggers and what ever else I would use a carabiner for. Just a thought

Yep, definitely use a climbing rated carabiners. I've looked at hundreds and finally decided on the C.A.M.P. Nano 23 as a great combination of strength, low weight and price.

I got a better price by purchasing climbing biners in bulk. For example, if you get the Black Diamond Neutrino from REI, you could take 20% off one item (member discount) and get SIX for about $28. They've worked great for me!
