True/False: The longer the hammock, the higher the ridgeline will be

I'm no math wizard, but this just dawned on me. If you have an 11 foot hammock, and you want your ridgeline to be 83% of the total length of the hammock (109.5 in.) to create a 30% sag, then your hammock ridgeline is going to be significantly higher off the ground than a 9 ft. hammock if you want to maintain an 18" height from bottom of hammock to ground.

Is this a duh moment for me? Am I stating the obvious?

Let me put it another way. The hammock and ridgeline form a half moon. An 11-foot hammock will create a larger, wider, and taller half moon than a 9-ft. hammock. Therefore the ridgeline will be higher off the ground and the tarp must also be pitched higher off the ground.

It seems like a fact to me. I putzed with it, and only by making the ridgeline longer could you get away from a taller ridgeline.

    Right you are.

My high school calculus teacher taught us to take concepts to their extremes to understand how changes affect things. So in this case it's obvious that a 1000' long hammock would have a huge distance between the hammock body and ridgeline. So, lengthening a hammock does increase the height of the ridgeline.

    You're absolutely correct!
I made a nylon 1.5oz hammock that is 11' long but with a 88% ridgeline; therefore it didn't say too much. I made another 11' hammock with polyester 2.5 oz material and it wasn't comfortable until I shortened the ridgeline to 81%. It hung so low that I couldn't reach high Enough on the tree to hang it. I had to shorten the hammock.

your exactly right, I am hanging my ends alittle higher with 109" RL on a SNIPE from Wilderness Logics, but not a bunch higher, and what a lay,,I have had a perfect sleep every nite in it almost 2 months now, and never one time of knee stress or leg stress what so ever,,its the best lay ever. Totally amazed at how comfy this is going to order a backup for sure. I am 6' and 165 lbs. bare,,lol,,and this is my 5th hammock to try out and the best by far.

Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I'm known to miss the obvious sometimes. When I went to hang the 11 ft. hammock it was on the ground and then I went back to my office to think about the geometry of the issue so I could understand.

After cogitating for a while, I came back outside, raised the tree straps up the tree, and all was right with the world. I must say a longer hammock gives an outstanding lay. As soon as I lay down I feel like dozing off.

    Idk man...
If I had a really long hammock, I wouldn't necessarily hang it high, but I'd make it tighter to have less sag. That way, it might still have the same height difference from the bottom of the curve to the ridge-line point as the shorter hammock. If you think about it, you're going to hang the hammock over a longer distance and make the hammock have less sag since your butt would sink lower to the ground the longer the hammock is w/ the same ammount of tension.
