    Noobs First hang: Success!

Gear So after getting some solid advice about hammock choices and hammock length I went with a 12'x58" gathered end DIY hammock from 1.9 Ripstop. I rigged a 25yr old dept store special square cut summer bag as my under insulation and opened up my REI sub-kilo mummy to use as an overquilt

Conditions: Since I've never done the hammock thing before I was nervous that my first time would be really uncomfortable. So for my first hang I decided to eliminate some variables and hang in the basement. This way I could focus on if I could get comfortable and actually sleep. Glad I did because the rain started at about 2am.

Results So I would say that hammocking is 100x more comfortable than sleeping on a my Z-rest pad on the ground. Sleeping on the ground is just plain painfull sometimes. No so with the hammock. I would say I normally get 2 or 3 sleep sessions of 2-3 hours during the night when I'm on the ground. I'd say I got the same amount of sleep in the hammock but it was more comfortable.

Tweeks to Consider I noticed that my top quilt kept rolling off the side of the hammock. I think I'd like to add some draw stings to the sides like the Snipe has to draw the loose sides at my head and feet in and keep the top quilt in place and on the hammock.

For the conditions the sub-kilo was way too much bag. I need a top quilt for warmer conditions but the sub-kilo is what I'll be using this summer on my CO trip. I don't think I'd be able to sleep in it as a "bag" but as a quilt it works great. Also going to make a DIY PLUQ.

HUGE THANKS TO HAMMOCK FORUM USERS! I've found so much usefull info here. Thanks a ton for all the usefull posts.

Congrats on the first successful overnight hang. I have found that the more I sleep in the hammock, the longer my "sleep sessions" are. I too would sleep a couple hours at a time at first, but now I ususally sleep straight through the night. I suppose a persons brain just adjusts to hammock sleep after a while.

Shug has a good video on using a sleeping bag as a topquilt. It might help with the problem you mentioned.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFWs6...ure=plpp_video

Also, if you look around theres quite a few good write-ups on the PlUQ. Good luck.

Congratulations on your first successful hang. Kind of a bummer though that you didn't get to sleep under a tarp in the rain, it is such a wonderful experience to be be hanging listening to the pitter patter of rain on the tarp.

Thanks for the link. I love shugs videos. Priceless. Still undecided on the use if ccf pad. Maybe I'll give it a try on my next backyard test.

Congrats on your first hang. Much more comfortable than the ground--no rocks and no roots to contend with. After a few nights you'll sleep straight thru. Also, I recommend the CCF pad. Give it a try.

Congratulations! It's always smart to hang near home (or under home) when trying out something completely different. Without a sewn in bugnet, Knotty's shock cord modifications are wonderfully effective at keeping your quilt in the hammock with you.

Better than the ground... isn't it the truth!!

Once you go outside with that 12' hammock, your going to need a very long tarp to keep it covered. You'll probably want to try out that combination in the backyard.

The only thing keeping me from a straight run of sleep in my hammock is the fact that my bladder won't cooperate!
