Pencil marks, to wash or not to wash

I am currently working on an UQ. I am working with a white, red and a blue marking pencil. This is the first project I have done where I worked with really light colors and dark pencil color. Should I wash the material before I stuff it to get rid of the pencil marks or will they just fade away?

All of my pencil marks where done on the inside of my quilts, but with that said, I found that if I made a mistake that just wiping the marks with a damp paper towel or sponge erased them.

Mine are also on the inside but I got a very light grey. The white marks where not visible so I went with red. Now that the quilts baffles are sewn I can see a faint line through the material. Maybe I should at least do a hand soaking.

It kind of depends on what you are using as a marker and what the fabric is. If it is a true sewing marking pencil there are a couple of different methods to remove the marks. Some come out with washing, some come out with ironing. If you are using colored drawing pencils then all bets are off. I would mark up a scrap piece of fabric with your pendils and try either the washing or the ironing and see what happens. My concern with drawing pencils is the wax content of the "lead". Water might not remove it and heat might just melt and smear it around. Fabric pencils are made with tailors chalk which has a totally different composition.

    Test on scrap first.

The packaging should tell you how to best remove the marks. If you don't have the packaging any more you might check with the vendor for that information.

    "Cheap supplies"
I honestly prefer using a good colored pencil. Sucker just marks better. I usually cover the mark but sometimes you can see it faintly through. I think that we see it because we know exactly where it is.

from what I've seen fabric pencil either comes off with heat, friction, or water. since this is on the inside of your finished product, I'd assume your options are to pinch and rub in a way so that your marks are between your fingers (heat and friction) or to soak the effected parts in water. As always test a scrap piece first.

    Yes, I use chalk.

I also use some 'air erasable pens' which write like a fibre tip pen but completely disappears in 24-48 hrs.

It makes me complete projects quicker
