Ridge line wear on the tarp

Here in the central US we get PLENTY of wind. I am worried that the ultra thin lines (zing it) will lead to trouble with my tarp wearing holes in a big wind. Has anyone had this issue with a tarp hung over the ridgeline? Or am I just worried for nothing?

For most of my tarps I tend to hang the ridgeline underneath and have yet to see any wear.

Windy conditions are one reason that I would run my RL under the tarp for more support. My thought is that tent flys are stretched across tent pole on most tents and you never hear of the fly wearing.

I've only heard of wear with cuben fiber. It's known cuben is prone to abrasion. I think Spinn is too. Silnylon fares pretty well, I'm guessing it's the silcon aspect of it.

I have had the underslung ridgeline cause noticeable wear on PU coated nylon tarps. It did effect the waterproofness of that area. (occasional drips in heavy rain) Since, I've switched to using split ridgelines and pannel pull-outs, no more abrassion and the pannel pulls do a fine job in windy conditions.

I think you have good reason to suspect that the tarp continuous ridgeline could cause problems with chafe, especially since we tend to use very small diameter lines. One precaution I take is to allow the section of line underneath the tarp to have a slight bit of sag in it. Since the load is carried only from the prusick knots to the trees, you can make the center section as slack as you want.

From what I hear its a common concern but I've never read any reports of it ever happening.

I stand corrected lol this is the first post I've ever read where someone actually had their rl cause damage to their tarp

This was more a result of user error than anything. I was using paracord and had the belief that everything had to be bowstring tight. It also took about 2 seasons of leaving the thing up for several extended periods (2 weeks+) before it became obvious. It didn't ruin the tarp either, I just laid the seam sealer on extra heavy & wide along the ridge seam and it stopped any further leaks.

I wish I still had the thing so I could take pics. I assumed that it was common, at least with PU coated nylon. Since joining HF & becoming a diehard hanger I have since learned better.
