    Warbonnets and Pads

I currently use an ENO DN but it doesn't play very well with pads.

I am a really warm sleeper, and find that a pad, coupled with my sleeping bag works really well as a 3 season set up for me...when the pad can stay put.

I was wondering how Warbonnets get along with pads.

As always, thanks in advance for all the positive and constructive information I know I am going to receive

I don't typically use pads, but on a trip this past weekend I was forced to use one since it was too hot for my Incubator UQ. The pad never moved on me the entire night in my 1.1DL Blackbird. I typically toss, turn, get in, and get out all freakin' night long. Drives me crazy, but I never once had to adjust the pad.

I use both the Self Inflating Thermarests as well as the Air core type pads like the Big Agnes or Exped.

I have slept comfortably down into the 20's with the pads in a 15* down bag and a hat, but I can tell when I get a little off the pad almost immediately.

I have found my WBBB takes both kinds of pads very well with little slipping around.

The double layered WBBB are designed for pads. Mine works well.

I only 1/2 inflate my pad, and it stays still.
The Double layer is nice and keeps it in one spot.

Before I could afford UQs, My wife and I used a wallyworld waffle pattern blue foam pad (24"+ wide) in our BB doubles. Had minimum shifting if any. Never had the condensation problem some complain about. Could be the waffle pattern allowed enough air circulation is my guess.

I tried a self inflating air pad that I used when I was a lowly tent camper and did not find it all comfortable in the hammock

Picture is pad in my wife's BB.

Double layered hammocks do several things:
Increase the stiffness of the lay.
Increase the lifespan of the hammock.
Trap pads-even if your only using a small foot pad with a 2/3 or 3/4 UQ.
Decrease chance of a mosquito needle piercing you.
The benefits outweigh the weight penalty to me, ymmv of course

I've used a few exped pads (down and syn) and recently a large trecker pad in the WBBB dbl. The dbl layer holds the pad in well. The footbox I have had mixed results. With the exped pads, the foot box generally helped keep the pad in the diagonal, which was really nice. The trecker pad seemed to fight the footpad and want to pop out and lay in the hammock straight. I don't fully inflate the pads, but the trecker seemed more sensitive to the air pressure differences within the pad itself.

All these pads were large/wide size not the 20" diameter. I think a mummy shaped pad would work best, but haven't tested one. I was looking a a POE mummy before I bought my underquilt, then neo-air/trecker came out and it has a smaller overall packing size. Exped pads are easily my overall favorite. Their air chambers seem to give a more even pressure even while laying on them partially filled.

Still, I am thinking of getting the smallest neo-air lite (the new version) that I can use in the footpad, but primarily so I have something for the ground if needed. Length of the packed pad makes a big difference for me, more so than weight or even diameter. But, I've never owned a small or 3/4 pad, so any advice or warnings would be appreciated on that front. (thanks MedicineMan re comment about small pads... that it is good to know!)

BTW- I have a dbl switchback and it holds pads very well too, but not as well as the WBBB. The footbox makes a difference, IMO. At the same time, the large width pads helps the switchback with shoulder squeeze and to spread the hammock out a bit (same was true in an older Speer single hammock). I am not sure how it would feel with a 3/4 because the switchback has a very flat lay, and it might cause an issue at one's hip.

    Hope this helps.
