There are topics around here about coloring Tyvek. I believe there has been successful reports with both Krylon Fusion & with Leather shoe Dye.

    I found a source for Tyvek: materialconcepts.com
They sell an 8' x 10' groundsheet of Type 10 for $19.99, but they charge $12 to ship.

Headchange4u did a nice research job on Tyvek, and he says it doesn't take fabric dyes at all well. (He has pics to demonstrate.) The surface of Tyvek takes printing well, though.

Interestingly, Material Concepts has black tyvek. A 45" x 30 yd. roll would yield 10 ground tarps, each 36" x 45". Shipping is high, but a group buy is possible; the cost per tarp would be < $10. (No, I'm not in the market for a black ground tarp myself).

I've used a tent with a sin bathtub floor. (Tarptent) I haven't used a ground cloth with it on most of my trips. It has held up fine. One small pinhole from a pine needle is all I can tell is wrong with it.

How about the polycryo ground sheets from gossamer gear? They're clear. since you're in a place where the home improvement stores sell the window insulation film, you could buy that (same as what GG sells) and use it. Cheap and supposed to last well.

I think in leaning towards making somthing of my own out of silnylon.. It would be a good place to learn, as its basicly a floor mat, so if I screw up, who cares lol..

if weight is a concern, check out the cuben fiber cloudkilt at zpacks. it's a rain kilt that doubles as a ground cloth. the short only weighs 1.45 oz. and the regular only weighs 1.6 oz. either would be plenty big for a ground cloth under a hammock.

That's a fantastic example of multi-use gear PackEagle!
