    Help needed- BWC trip planning

MY dad and I are in the early stages of planning a trip to the boundary waters this fall. Apparently you have to apply for a permit, ie know access/entrance points, early on. I was wondering for those of you that know the area, are there any suggested routes or portages to avoid for an old guy with not so great knees???? We are wanting to go into Quetico, and are looking to canoe/camp 5 nights. Thanks in advance!

Maybe go to Seagull and head north or start at Saganaga and go into Northern Lights Lake for some basecamping.
There should be enough islands and bays to keep you busy and hug the shorelines to stay out of the wind..
It is big water, so plan layover days and move early before the winds come up for the day.

Check out the "Man Lakes" chain in Quetico also.

Just a starting point for you, of course.

keys? you might want to take your question over to bwca.com. They aren't quite as nice as us hammock folks () but they are very knowledgeable about routes and conditions in the Q.

When in the fall were you planning?

    Fall trip as well

I am taking the family up there to do some day hikes and hanging, around the end of October, if the weather holds. I also need to know some kid friendly sub 5 mile loops and such. Also any advice or gotchas to know ahead of time would be appreciated.

+1 on bwca.com. They will be a great at sending you in the right direction. Are you planning on using an outfitter? If so they can set you up. I personally don't use them but even if you ae not using them they will be more than helpfull with helping you setup a route and letting you know how though the routes are. If you have an REI near you you can go and look at the maps and checkout the topography between the lakes the topography is usually the hardest part about the portages. I will digress as you really should go to the bwca.com
