Q's about Webbing and Whoopie Sling on an ENO DN

I have an ENO DoubleNest and am considering a whoopie sling set up to replace all the stuff at the end of the hammock. A couple of questions:

    1. I saw a bunch of different webbing at REI. Is 1 inch wide (seems to be what everyone recommends) recommended to protect the tree or due to a weight rating? Can I get by with something smaller and lighter?

    2. How do I attach a whoopie sling to the ENO DN? It has a sewn "track" that the stock cord is looped through with a caribiner attached to that. Do I just push the fixed loop through that "track" and feed the rest of the WS through the fixed loop or do I need to splice it directly into the track? Did that make sense (sorry, still learning the terminology)?

    Thanks.

1 inch is the standard but not what is offered at REI. It is normally nylon which will stretch. The webbing they offer is made for climbing but is not the preferred option for hammocks.

You can set up slings in a Chanel either way but splicing them into the channel makes it so that you have to wash suspension and all should you want to clean the hammock.

Great point about the washing. Hadn't thought about that.

Guess I need to learn about nylon too!

    Thanks.

Polyester is by far preferred for hammock suspensions. It does not stretch the way nylon will. There are a number of vendors that are members here on the forum (cough) that carrie webbing that is made for and tested for our use as hangers. Some of us have done both extensive in house and laboratory testing to insure that it's the best for us.

    1. Yes, 1" will work, make sure its Polyester, not nylon or you'll end up on the ground slowly overnight. 3/4" should hold as well, but 1" will stand up to the use/abuse better.

    2. Run the fixed end thru the gathered ends just like the stock 3/8" black rope is routed (twice) then larkshead it to itself and make your adjustments at the toggle end. (See pic and check this guy out)

Put the whoopie ON THE KNOT, not the toggle.

The webbing you saw at REI is Nylon for climbing and is meant to have a little stretch in it. Not good for Hammock suspension. You want no stretch so I would recommend buying webbing made of Polyester. AHE, Whoopieslings.com, and Jacks R Better all sell them.

Yes! That is called a Larks Head attachment. There are several ways to attach the whoopie to the strap. My first method was the Marlin Spike Hitch done with a toggle. I now use a Dutch Buckle but there are also Whoopie Hooks, both found at dutchware.com.
Others will chime in on their methods, these are just mine.

Only if you thrive on tedium. Use the rope that is already in the channel (track) to pull the fixed loop through the channel.

Polyester webbing of sufficient strength is the way to go.

I like installing the whoopie slings like Oldgringo says. I made a video of such here.

I tied a piece of zing-it through the channel twice to bunch up the end, then attached the whoopie around the material ahead of the gathered end. This way I am putting the weight on the material of the hammock, and not relying on the sewn channel (not that the channel won't hold, just a peace of mind thing). This way the whoopie is easily removed if needed.

So you just lashed it together like Warbonnet does? What knot did you use & size zing it?
