    Aluminum Rings

    I found this supplier while looking for aluminum rings to use on tree huggers. They warranty the rings to 250 lbs but they say a single ring will lift 3000 lbs. Maybe someone has the ability to do some testing on them but if they work, they are sold in pairs so at $3.30 / pr compared to around $3 for a single.

    Where did you see the 3000 lbs rating? I only see 250lbs on the website.

    They are available in different colors, which is kinda cool.

    It's on another page here

    http://slingrings.com/testing.php

    It's totally un-official and when questioned about it they always come back to it's only guaranteed to 250 so it may be a fluke or maybe they just don't want people going out and trying to climb mountains with these.

    Why chance it, here's 50 grams, 24 kilonewtons holding power, or 5,400 pounds, at REI for $4.93 each. http://www.rei.com/outlet/product/760354 I'd spend the additional $1.63 and not worry about it. Plus if you have them delivered to a store by you, there's no shipping charges. If your not a member of the co-op, let me know and I'll let you use my co-op number. Won't help on your purchase but I'll get credit that way.

    Other than the color options the main reason would be cost (I'm a cheap-scate).

    You'd spend $20 + gas to go pick them up (so let's round that to $30) at REI. These rings will run $10 delivered. That's worth the test to me to save 10 - 20 dollars.

    Slainte!

    And a bit of Robbie Burns for your reading pleasure:

    O Willie brew'd a peck o' maut,
    And Rob and Allen cam to see;
    Three blyther hearts, that lee-lang night,
    Ye wadna found in Christendie.

    Chorus.-We are na fou, we're nae that fou,
    But just a drappie in our ee;
    The cock may craw, the day may daw
    And aye we'll taste the barley bree.

    Here are we met, three merry boys,
    Three merry boys I trow are we;
    And mony a night we've merry been,
    And mony mae we hope to be!

    It is the moon, I ken her horn,
    That's blinkin' in the lift sae hie;
    She shines sae bright to wyle us hame,
    But, by my sooth, she'll wait a wee!

    Wha first shall rise to gang awa,
    A cuckold, coward loun is he!
    Wha first beside his chair shall fa',
    He is the King amang us three.

    Meaning of unusual words:
    maut=malt (whisky)
    fou=drunk
    drappie=droplet
    daw=dawn
    ay=always
    barley bree=whisky
    lee-lang=live-long
    ken=know
    blinkin=glinting
    lift=sky
    wyle=lure
    by my sooth=upon my word
    loun=fool

    If you are a true Scot then you will really love the SMC descending rings.

    You can buy directly from SMC for $2.75 each.

    You don't have to be concerned about the 250 lb limit since the SMC descending rings are rated to 3,147 lbf - 14kN.

    So be a True Scot and get the cheaper and stronger alternative.
