Modding My Byer Amazona

I have a Byer Amazona Traveller and I am thinking about modding it by cutting off the stock rope system and whipping the Hammock Speer-style. The lines always seem to tangle up and get twisted. I paid 14.99 for the hammock so if I screw it up I won't be out much.

What do you think? Should I go for it? Foresee any problem doing this?

We probably need a Byer Forum in the manufacturers section. Just a suggestion, but I thought I would throw that out there.

I just added a Byer Amazona Hammock forum.

Before cutting it maybe you should trying using some cloth or going to WalMart and getting some fabric in the fabric department and making a real cheap one to see how it works first. That is what I am going to do this weekend.

You could also just leave the astock stuff on there and put the whip in front of it and see how it hangs. If you decide you don't like it no harm done. If you do like it just cut off the stock stuff and melt the ends of the fabric.

I have enough DWR ripstop nylon to make a couple of speer style hammocks. I just haven't taken the time to roll hem the edges yet.

I thought that modding the Byer would be a quick way to create a Speer hammock with no sewing at all.

If you cut the ropes and whip, you're effectively shortening the length of the hammock. Measure the distance of the actual material, then subtract ~4" for the whipping. If it's still about 2' more than your height, go for it.

I got plenty of room. Byer states tht the hammock measures

Traveller Hammock Flat: 54" x 84"

and I am 5'10'' so I am safe in the length area.

EDIT:

On second thought that does not leave much room length wise. I guess it's time to break out the sewing machine.........

Cool - if the 84" doesn't include the ropes, you'll be right in there. Should probably figure 4" per side for the whipping (wasn't clear about that in the last post), so you'll be right on the line. I'd do what hogn8r said and whip it with the lines still on there, then cut them off if you like it.

Actually, you could whip about 6" of the line in there (i.e. whip the lines instead of the fabric) and gain some length for the hammock. And w/ only 6" I don't think it would tangle like it does w/ full-length lines.

If I were to leave 6" of line would I even need to whip it? Couldn't I just tie all the cords together into a knot 6" from the fabric and the attach my webbing behind the knot?
