    Help ID'ing Wally Fab

My sister found some Walmart fabric but I'm confused as to what it is. I don't have it yet, but she sent me some test results and some pics. Does this make any sense?

Water test- it did not leak, water beaded off

    Breath test-does not breathe

Burn test-beads up into a black plastic

    Fray test- doesn't fray easily

Crinkle test-crinkles when you bunch it up

Has it got a shiny side and a dull side?

I just bought a bolt (10.5 yards) of what looks to be the exact same material. I thought it was 1.1 sil until I compared it with some sil. It is not as slick as sil but it is slick. Could it be a DWR coating ? There is a dull & shiny side and it is 1.1 I believe. There was also a bolt of blaze orange 1.9 but I passed on that.

Looks like DWR rip stop to me. For some reason that gray/silver DWR rip stop seems to be one of the most abundant materials found in the WM $1 bin. One local WM, at one time, had 3 bolts of what looks like the exact same material. The material also looks pretty thin so it's probably 1.1oz.

It's not sil. I can tell by the way the edges are fraying.

The tiny diameter squares on that make me think it could be polyester ripstop, with a DWR coating. The ripstop nylon I've found has always had larger squares. Come to think of it, it looks exactly like the stuff I just picked up at JoAnns bargain bin. 1/8 inch squares, which look much smaller than the normal squares on all my Nylon ripstop.

    Me too

I have yards of this left from making snakeskins.
Would this fabric make a good tarp?

My sis says a 3yd piece weighs 7oz. That's about 1.4oz. I think it may be the same stuff I built my ARK out of. She said she could return it if I didn't want it. She got (2) 12 yd pieces and (1) 3yd piece.

If it is 1.4 DWR poly-rip, what is it suitable for?

She's still going to keep looking for. Anybody got a good set of pics showing the different hammock/tarp suitable materials?

Hey, poly-rip is just as good as nylon, and in some applications even better. The Travel Hammock uses poly-rip for most of their hammocks. It doesn't stretch as much as nylon, so it makes a flatter bed, but with the DWR coating, I don't know if I'd use it for a hammock (not breathable.) Make yourself an excellent black cat tarp - you only need 8 yds. for that.
