    NOOB Question

Hey I don't know the answer to this question and I thought I would get someone's opinion that knows more about hammocks and suspension. Can you have one side of the suspension shorter then the other? Meaning one side being 5' tree strap, and 4' whoopie sling and the other be 10' tree strap and 6' whoopie sling? Not being a complete idiot I know you probably shouldn't have mismatching lengths but I don't know why. Anyone have an a good reason why or why not?

If your hammock isn't centered between the trees, you'll need to hang the end with the longer span from hammock to tree much higher on the tree. Otherwise, the hammock won't be level. But, you can indeed get it level by altering the height of the attachment points.

There's no benefit to having one longer or shorter, save a really long one giving you more options on a larger tree.

Having the suspensions the same length makes it easier to level a hammock and keep your centre of gravity more to the middle of the hammock. If the webbings are at the same height on both trees but if the foot end suspension is shorter, then the hammocks foot end will be higher than the head end. Having the foot higher than the head is actually preferrable in small increments to avoid getting calf ridge pressure in a gathered end hammocks. The greater the disparity in lengths, the more your centre of gravity will be off when in the hammock. If the suspensions were different lengths as well as different heights on the trees, then that could keep the hammock more leveled and you'd be more centred. So if your foot end suspension is a lot shorter than the head end suspension but the webbing is also much lower on the tree than it is on the head end tree, you can keep a level hammock.

    Thanks!

The reason I asked this question is because I practiced on the leftover scraps I had from my first DIY hammock project. The practice suspension and tree strap turned out great! So Why throw them out right?!
