+8 on UQ. You can use a sleeping bag, blanket or whatever as a TQ. The UQ is unique as it has to go around the outside, so that it's not compressed. Use a 0* down sleeping bag in a hammock & you'll likely still get cold in 30* weather. But you can get away with a good 30* UQ & a 40* sleeping bag for a TQ.

Try a pad a few times. The biggest problem I encountered was cold shoulders from the pad not being wide enough & kind of sweaty as there's no air movement.

    I vote for UQ.

I did a 3 layer IX DIYGearSupply and found that it was a great improvement over the foam pad/sleeping bag approach. Did 2 nights in March, it was mid 40's temp those nights, and I was quite comfortable with a cotton sheet and a 40 degree bag on top.

UQ using your sleeping bag partially unzipped (or even with a zipperectomy)...because pads are of the Devil.

Go with the underquilt. Even on my inside hammock, I can't get warm without an underquilt but I can lay there quite comfortably with no covers.

+20 on the UQ!!! You can use anything on top of yourself, and it's easier to warm the top side, but not the underside.
