Down Sleeping Bag/quilt Taking Up Space around Upper Body

    Hi,

One minor thing I'd like to get around is how my down sleeping bag tends to crowd my face and takes up space when I'm trying to read and move around in my hammock.

It seems I tend to have to pat it down every time I shift or move.

I'm wondering if synthetic bags help because they are less bulky.

Any thoughts on the subject would be great.

    Thanks.

Measure your sleeping bag with it unzipped down the sides,,length and width,,then compare size of sleeping bag to a Top Quilt. You will find out why top quilts are designed and made the size they come in. What you should find out is that the sleeping bag is larger size wize than a custom made top quilt and thus the reason most use a top quilt over a sleeping bag. You could get a smaller bag to compinsate for the issues your having with the one your using. To answer your question about synthetic,,there again answer the size of the bag before you buy a synthetic and see if that is the reason your being overcrowded in the hammock by the size of the bag you already have.

    To illustrate Acer's previous point:

My Western Mountaineering sleeping bags, which have smaller girth than most, measure about 65" across when layed out flat. All my top quilts are 40" wide.

Thanks for your help guys. I didn't realize top quilts have this added benefit.

That's a huge difference going from 65" to 40". Thank you for telling me this.

Last year I invested in a full down underquilt (hammockgear). It looks like my next purchase could be a top quilt.
