Assuming you don't just 'hang around' all day, what are some of your unique activities you do to keep kids interested while hammock camping? I have the obvious ones (fishing, hiking, fire making, etc) covered. Any obscure ones you guys can share?

The harder I work, the luckier I get.
Sling shot is a staple on our trips. Whittling various things, Glow sticks,survival shelters, fire with out matches, making a good hiking stick with our leathermans and wrap the handle with 550 cord.

One thing I used to do with my kids, and they still talk about, is give them a piece of string long enough to make a circle about 3 ft. in diameter and find a place that has a fair amount of biodiversity and make the circle. Have them sit and observe the circle and write down as many things as they can see inside the circle. If they watch closely, they will be amazed at all the little critters, plants, fungi, moss, etc. that they will see. It helps them realize that there is more beyond all the "big" stuff we tend to focus on in the woods, and in life.
Another one was to do an alphabet treasure hunt. I did this with a bunch of kids once at a church camp where I was a counselor. Find things in nature beginning with all the letters of the alphabet. X is difficult. I was a little freaked out when one of the kids for "M" brought in a marijuana plant. Guess he paid attention in DARE class. Good old Indiana ditch weed still thrives in some areas.

Map and compass skills are worth while, fun and may save a life some day.
Emty the pockets and determine how many ways each item can be used.
Identify plants with a guide book.
Same with birds.

My mum used to bring us simple toys to play with like frisbees, cats cradle strings, cards and diablo sticks. Those aren't really that obscure, but they are fun.
We always bring a slingshot too like Lonewolf said.
Just a note -- I'm the District Training Chair for in my area, and I have to point out that if it's a Boy Scout campout, hand-held sling shots are not allowed. They are treated the same as firearms and archery equipment and can only be utilized at authorized Council activities.
One alternative is building a catapult and some water balloons. Lots of fun!

car camping bores my boys and so does camping in the same spot after we hike in or kayak in.the prefer to camp on the move.as long as i keep them moving they are fine.neo

No mention of scouting in the thread, but a good point for those new dads taking thier sons to thier first scout camp weekend.
i really enjoyed scouting when i was growing.but the troop me and my boys were in was a crappy troup,in fact the whole cherokee district we were in had a lot of hidden agenda's.so bad we are we never want to involved with scouting againOriginally Posted by Lone Wolf
