Yes, I think that the chances of something bad happening to me are very remote.
Don't know, never really thought about it.
Maybe, I know bad things can happen; but probably not to me.
No, therefore I want to exercise my legal right to use a lawful firearm for self defense.

The most obvious choice: "No, but I think that the chances of something bad happening to me are very remote." is not offered. Doesn't look like the outcome of the poll is here nor there, judging by the rest of the post. Do you carry the axe and the grinder everywhere or just the axe? (Concealed?)
No way can your personal safety while camping/hiking be assured. Heck stepping out your front door is a risk these days. I'm no moderator, but this post really needs to be in the "Members open discussion" section. Which requires that you be a donating member BTW. It is not hammock related.

Sorry, I do not agree with you that personal safety while hiking and/or camping is not a hammock related topic.
Just my two cents.
Touche! Sometimes is is hard for me to differentiate between the message and the messenger.
This poll seems rhetorical to me and not a true data gathering effort. I too think it should be in the discussion section. While there may be times when I think safety may be a concern, I do not, as the poll implies, think that packing heat is the solution.

I'm not sure what to say at this point about mention of the questions being off topic. I'll wait & see what the other mods have to say.
I can understand wanting to get the opinions of others about how safe they feel when they are out hammock camping, but I didn't see a choice on the poll that expresses my feelings<g>.
Our safety is never assured.
I feel I'm much safer in the woods than I am driving to get there, or most other places were there are every kind of people running loose.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
I don't buy in to the "be afraid" mentality the media tries to brainwash us with. However, I do believe in preparedness and I certainly feel it's smart to carry a weapon in the wilderness just in case of attack by any animal, four or two footed. It's like taking a poncho in case it rains... it probably won't, but if it doesn, you're prepared.
Given the tendency toward lighter weight gear, it seems to me that anyone who wants to be prepared to defend themselves in the wilderness could carry pepper spray or pepper foam and save themselves the weight and legal issues of carrying a handgun. Pepper foam in particular will really do a number on a human being, but no handgun short of a major magnum caliber should even be considered as a defensive (or offensive) weapon against a bear. Or a moose. Maybe a white-tailed deer. You never know when Bambi will attack.
I wonder how much "defense" can be granted to:
being observant of one's surroundings,
keeping food out of the hammock,
listening to the little voice from within about certain folks who seem "out of place",
and doing a little homework before the trip about animal populations
I've met some who carry a piece to avoid using common sense that would negate the need for it. I understand not everything can be avoided, but up to this point for me, my best defense has been the gray matter within. And the best thing yet....it doesn't add any additional weight to the pack!
