Claytor Suspension

Hello all,

I just purchased a JH last night and I've already got the mod bug biting. I do a lot of hiking along the AT, in WV and in Kentucky so I'm a gram weenie. I've read about the potential wicking issues of the current suspension systems and I would like to rectify it.

What systems are out there? I've been using my ENO DN rig for a few years so I'm used to the whoopie sling and tree hugger system. The JH isn't a bunched end hammock so I don't really know what I'm doing.

My claytor suspension has been swapped out for camp nano biners, webbing and cinch buckles. It is faster to setup, easier to adjust, and all but eliminates water runoff. That said, it is heavier than the stock suspension. You will find little else that is lighter than the stock suspension. if you are worried about the runoff, tie some strips of shamwow on the suspension webbing and they will wisk the runoff straight down and away from the hammock.

Take some strong cordage and make a loop in the channel of your hammock. Mine is 12 inches long. You then attach this to whatever suspension you choose.

For instance, larks head the fixed end of your whoopies to that continuous loop and you can use your current ENO's suspension.

I have used several suspensions on my Claytor clone... Each with good and bad points.

i been using the claytor jungle hammock 6 years now.i never use my hennessey or dd hammocks,i let my friends use them lol

i tied off some cinch rings to the ends of mine. then i use diy tree huggers i made to attach the hammock to the tree. super fast set up.water should run down the tree hugger straps to the cinch rings and drip off the cinch rings. im even thinking on something that i can tie off to the cinch rings to catch rain water if it rains.thats my set up anyhow. i like the quickness and simplicity of it.

You could always tie a piece of string on your whoopies to act as a water deferral if it is a problem. Hits the string and drips down.

You notice any difference in the lay in the hammock with the ends cinched up? I went continuous loop because I thought the slight "fanning" in the channel made the hammock roomier. I'm 6'3" and my current DIY Claytor is just short of 10 feet long. It's been quite comfy!

On a side note... Rings can be easily larks headed into the continuous loops as well for a ring and strap suspension.

True on the rings, I have one with a double larks head continuous loop and rings. I haven't noticed a real difference in the cinching. I am 6'2 as well and I can get pretty comfortable. I have BlackBirds, but somehow keep coming back to the claytor. My next effort is going to be a DIY of the design on Scott Littlefield's site DIY gear. Very similar to a claytor only wider. Sure is fun putzing with all this stuff huh!
