WOW... yes it does... Lost our house in SC five years back after it hit a tree in front of house, went through the house house on the second floor, in and out of roof twice, to hit tree beside pool in backyard. House was gone before firetrucks arrived.

I do have a litttle tendency to "tighten up" when it starts flashing around.

Wet ropes can make excellent conductors. This is BAD news when it comes to lightning activity. If you are mountain climbing and see lightning, and can do so safely, remove unnecessary ropes extended or attached to you. If a rope is extended across a mountain face and lightning makes contact with it, the electrical current will likely travel along the rope, especially if it is wet.

they also caution against metal such as tent poles. So I guess you pays your money and takes your chances... or you stay home.

Not sure of the impact of a hammock, I do know that most injuries occur in the out of doors as a result of feeders that are not direct strikes, but rather a result of lightning traveling through the ground and creating the resultant shock. I have also read that the safest place to be is a grove of similar height trees so that at least a strike will be random and not selective based on height. Preventive measures I have seen included sitting on the balls of your feet hunched over to minimize contact with the ground. Seems a hammock might be helpful in that regard.

Lightning kills more people than any other weather related phenomenan. I have had two friends killed by it. I respect it.

I would be more worried about lightning striking a tree which causes the tree to explode and a heavy limb falling on me than getting zapped

This happened to me one time. A friend's tent was crushed when half of a tree split off from a lightning strike. Luckily he wasn't in it!

Just did some googling and have come across several references to a suggestion made by Benjamin Franklin. I'm still looking for the original quote, but it seems to refer to being in a hammock (some accounts say silk) suspended by silk cords.

Glad to hear you didnt get jammed up with the storm. As you know, a properly pitched tarp can do wonders in nasty weather.

Did you do any fishing or just camping and exploring.
