I just got a couple of calls from Neo. He kayaked out to an unnamed island on a lake about 20 miles from where he lives, and it's storming like crazy. I could hardly hear him over the rain and wind. He is camping in a Claytor with a stock Claytor tarp. Just thought y'all'd like to know. He told me to tell all of you hi. He said his kayak was sinking after he got to the island or perhaps he meant on the way to the island because he forgot the drain plug, so he made one out of wood to get him home tomorrow.
    Neo rocks. Mule

    Neo,

Dude, that can be scary stuff. Lightning scares the crap out of me. I sat through a storm once that produced winds and 5 inches of rain. That wasn't so bad, what was scary was the lightning. After the rain, lightning moved in and you could literally smell the electricity in the air. I think I will feel much more comfortable in lightning OFF the ground. I keep hearing your stories, and combined with my own experience, it convinces me to stick with my stock Claytor tarp.

I am glad you are safe and sound. I'll bet that was a real adreneline rush bro!

Another one you can put in the journal of water travel!

Maybe this would be a good one to send to Mythbusters. I wonder what kind of hammock Buster uses?

Yes, that also makes me go ? Which is the path of least resistance? The human hanging between two trees, or, the human on the ground between ( or near to ) two trees? I tend to think on the ground would be less resistance and more risk, but I'm not sure. Especially since you are probably on a pad, increasing R.

OTOH, lightening on a path to ground through the tree would seem to have to take a path of greater R to go through the person and through the other tree and then to ground. But, having dealt with a lightening strike and fire on my house a few years back, I can attest that lightening does crazy things that seem difficult to explain with the laws of physics.

But I guess either way, if lightening strikes the trees you are camped under or that you are hanging from, you are going to have a wild and woolly night!

It would be best to choose trees that are shorter relative to the other trees around them, right?
