    Where does my Gear Go!?!?!

I'm a hammocker, however, i'm new to DYI hammocking. I've been just happy with my non-ultralight $20 dolla' store hammock and 10x10 all purpose tarp, it's worked for me. While planning a thruhike of the AT in 2013 i've complete rediculous amounts of research and sketching out different interesting ways of combining items as well as keeping my weight low. My current assignment is to figure out the best place for my gear to go when I set up camp. Bear bag will hung, sleep system will be set up so the remaining weight of my backpack should be about 12-18 lbs. I'm hoping for 12.

I'm creating a Cat-cut Hex Tarp which doesn't allow for a perfect place for my bag to go that will keep it dry. Has anyone tried a low-no stretch ridgeline and just hung it from there? so it's covered from the weather much like yourself?

Please help, i want to purchase materials sooner than later due to my excitement buuuuut I need my layout first.

I'll have a bug net waterproofed at the foot n' head ends to allow me visibility and keep me dry, n' that will be propped up over my ridgeline. I can imagine the convience on a nasty-weathered morning to be able to reach your bag from the comfort of you hammock.

    Please n' thanks.

What kind of pack??? I use mine as leg insulation...pack liner to keep items dry if need be. Hang things from continuos tarp ridgeline to dry/air out. I hang my pack liner (trash bag) from my foot end to help block wind/draft on my legs (not sure if it works). Any extra items go in the pack liner.

I did a diy cat hex tarp and I just hang my pack by my feet from the ridgeline or as 2tall said, I'll clip it to the SRL on the foot end and have it in the hammock with me. During fair weather I just hang it from a tree or where ever.

Not sure why i didn't think of that... just sleep with it. I got a ULA Circuit.

It'll be light enough i'll try that next time i set up the hammock, thanks!

During nice weather i will definitely let it hang on a tree, but inclimate weather was my main concern

I store mine in a gear hammock that I made myself. Here is a hike video that shows how I deploy it.

Here is a thread that talks about it in great detail with a construction video and diagram further on: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=36518

    Tyvek Groundsheet / spare tarp

I bring along a catcut tyvek tarp (my one DIY). It ain't pretty, but is a very economical and extremely light piece of 'Just-in-case' gear. For tieouts I simply took a short piece of paracord and connected it with a sheet bend at the six points so there is a small loop there that I can then add some Zing-it to if I need it as a tarp. It can be useful if it's raining out and you don't want to place your fire under your good tarp where your hammock is closeby.

When not using it as a tarp (which is usually) I often place it on the ground under my regular tarp as a groundsheet for keeping my pack and boots. In a pinch it can be used as a groundsheet if you have to go to ground. I find my Tyvek tarp/groundsheet/gearsheet an indispensable piece of gear (don't think it's over 4 oz).

If you don't have a buddy in construction that can get you a roll end (that would have been destined for a landfill anyway) you can buy enough for under $20 at http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tyvek-Ground...item1c251511c7

My one suggestion is to put it in the dryer with a shoe at lowest heat for about ten minutes to make is less crinkly. It actually gets quite soft over time and I've never had a single drip.

Bring less and have less to worry about. I either throw my pack on the ground under the hammock with whatever else I'm not using or I put the rest of the contents in my 2qzq gear organizer, which I wrap around a tree or hang from the tarp ridge line if its raining. Its nice, like having a dresser in the woods.

i went to the Ebay site, what length do you own? i like the idea of having a lightweight extra tarp on hand.

I made storage end covers for my gathered end hammock.

Also, open top bags that lays inside the ends...

They work great, but another easy way to store your gear is a gear hammock or just put your pack & shoes in a trash bag, on the ground next to your hammock. That works pretty good.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
