    New Hammock Stand

I wanted a hammock stand because although I have a ton of trees on my property none are suitable for hanging for one reason or another (mostly size). I also wanted one that would fit in the bed of my truck so it had to break down.

I did a little "creative sourcing" for the parts so my total cost was ZERO dollars. Actually the guys who work next to my office have a big scrap bin and I've got an arraingment with them were they let me occasionaly do a little dumpster diving.

    Pipes A&C are both 1 1/4" pipe, pipe B is 2 1/2".

I cut the A pipes to 88", the B pipes are 45", and the C pipe is 96.

The B pipes are drilled through with 1 3/4" holes one set parrellel to the ground, the other at about a 60 or so degree angle (I faked it and they aren't the same). As it sits right now the tops of the pipes are about 12' apart, I've got another piece of 1 1/4" pipe I'm going to add a slip joint to so I can stretch C just enough to accomodate my biggest tarp.

I welded the A pipes to the B pipes, but the C pipe is just a slip fit through the B pipe. When the hammock is loaded the A+B assembly pivots towards the load which locks it to pipe C.

Side Note Question... anyone know what would keep pictures from showing so wide as in this post, causing readers to have to scroll from side to side to read the post?

Does it have anything to do with the uploaded pictures size ( megapixels?) being too large? Just for speed of upload, I try to take pics for HF with a lower resolution, 1 megapixel or so. But I'm just guessing, don't really know.

No need to take separate lower resolution pictures, you can reduce the size and resolution with software very easily. I use Irfanview which I downloaded on the web.

    Pic Of The Clark

I had to add some tie downs to eat up some of the flexing I was getting with the pipes. The flexing made it real tough to get sag etc right because when I got in everything sagged like crazy.

Three tie downs and a couple of stakes and it works great.

Could you also weld a gusset between the upright and the end of the long bar on the bottom to essentially cut the span of the upright in half? Not sure if that's clear but basically creating a right triangle on both ends.

Yeah I could, but I wanted to be able to break this thing down and get it in the back of my truck, and I wanted be able to move the uprights back and forth and play with spacing etc. Besides the majority of the deflection was occuring in the middle of the bottom bar anway.

Nice to see I got the pic sized right this time...

Gotcha. I missed the part in your OP about it being a slip fit there. The stand looks great though. Definitely more compact than my 4x4 model. Probably weighs a bit less also.

I was actually surprised when building mine that without the braces on, the weight of the yard hammock (not my backpacking hammock) would pull the uprights inward even with such an extreme angle on the uprights. As they so, "with a long enough lever you can move the world."
