Some like these with the cordage they already have. Others have found that the life of their cordage is likely shortened because the cordage gets chewed up by the teeth.
I personally would not use these with lines that did not have a protective covers.

Have there been posts of pics of anyone here going to appropriate trouble of splicing covered and uncovered line, the way sailboat racers do, so the portion of the line running through cleats gets the necessary protection?

Well, I don't spend nearly as much time hanging as some, but I hadn't been too worried about my cord. I use Figure 9 carabiners with Zing It to tie out my tarp and the side pulls on my hammock. I guess there could be wear over repeated uses, but since every hang is a little different, seems like it would take a while before one section of line saw repeated abrasion enough to damage the line. For me there not used in critical areas anyway. Worst case scenario, a tie out snaps, and I have to replace it. That's what the spare line is for.

If people are having lines snap because of these, I'd certainly keep that in mind, but they're so handy that I would have a hard time letting them go. More likely I'd use them until the line breaks, and then use a new line.
