    Is it "car camping"?

Question that came up in conversation wondering what you guy's think.
How far do you need to be from vehicle to not be considered "car camping"?
Quarter mile, half, few miles? Just far enough that you can't see the car? (out west that could be pretty far) Curious if there where any opinions on this.

To me car camping is when I can not pack everything I need in a backpack and have to make a trip back to my truck for more gear. Or when I just pull up to my camp site.

That seems like a pretty good definition to me.

If you can't just pack up and move w/o needing to go back to the car... you're car camping.

    It's car camping if:
    1. You had to make more than one trip for all your gear
    2. 35lbs is the weight of just your cooking gear and not your whole pack
    3. Barnum and Bailey asked to borrow your tarp

Man that's a good question and I think that spaceweaseal and Pappy said it the best.

When I go camping with my boy scout troop I have everything that I take with me packed up like I was going backpacking, even though almost all the time we are car camping

    I agree with spaceweasel.
I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've brought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

Yeah, I really got tired of "car camping" with the scouts, so we put everything in a trailer. Now we can park the car as far away as we want.

P.S. - this is also true of camping with the family...after the camper is leveled of course.

When I can pull up to my campsite...and/or I over pack and can't get it all in one trip.

You know you're car camping when you reach out of your hammock and grab a cold drink out of the cooler on the picnic table.
