    Is it "car camping"?

Question that came up in conversation wondering what you guy's think.
How far do you need to be from vehicle to not be considered "car camping"?
Quarter mile, half, few miles? Just far enough that you can't see the car? (out west that could be pretty far) Curious if there where any opinions on this.

To me car camping is when I can not pack everything I need in a backpack and have to make a trip back to my truck for more gear. Or when I just pull up to my camp site.

That seems like a pretty good definition to me.

    I agree with spaceweasel.
I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've brought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

I kind of look at it like this: if I forgot something important, how far would I hike back to the car to retrieve and/or go buy the missing item? And for me, that's about three miles. If I left a porterhouse steak and a bottle of single malt whiskey in the trunk, I'd stash the pack and hike back in a heartbeat for such essential survival items.

For me car camping is anytime I need the car for more than getting my self and my backpack to the trail head.

If I'm carrying everything in my backpack that I need for my entire trip then I'm not car camping, even if I'm 10 feet from my car. Just my opinion on the matter.

Agreed. If you can carry it it's not really car camping.
