    Hangin' in the redwoods

Hi. I am going to do a 10 day either in the redwoods or the cascades. I haven't decided. I was wondering if anyone has done either of those and has any recommendations and also if I am going to have problems with those big freakin' trees up there. I sure can't wrap a tree hugger around them. Oh, and if it matters, the trip will be in mid to late June.

    Thanks!

Some extensions would help but really you'll be able to find a few trees that will work for you. Not all redwoods are massive. Depending on where you go, fog can be an issue.

Fog....mhmmm. I am guessing that ends with a wet unhappy camper. What do you do about fog? I use synthetics for everything. No down. That will help right?

Synthetics are fine, Down will be fine too. Big tarps with doors help. What part of the redwoods are you going to?

I don't know. I was hoping someone would tell me about the most fabulous trail I was going to do the lost coast, but my daughter wants to do the rainforest, so that would be the redwoods or cascades. I don't have a tarp with doors. Is that going to be a major problem?

I lived up on Whidbey Is. for 3 years and I remember the weather as raining, raining and did I mention, raining! Soooo what kind of tarp do you have? Because it's gonna be your most important piece of gear that keeps you dry. Depending on your tarp, I believe WarBonnet sells doors for tarps. I used to camp up near Mt Baker but that was in my pre-hammock days. Still, I do remember the trees as not being so big that I couldn't have gotten a really big tree strap around them. I know the straps on my Blackbird would be long enough. One more thing, try to practice setting up and taking down your camp in the rain, as much as your're able to before this trip. Hiking and camping in constant wet weather, your main concern will be to keep your bed dry.

We both have hennesy hammocks with the hex tarps. We car camped along the coast and down through the redwoods last March (brrrr), but she wants to go trecking into that moss. I figured our hammocks would be better at keeping us dry than tenting on the wet ground. Am I wrong?

I was thinking maybe the redwood creek trail, the Wonderland trail or part of the pacific crest or maybe a carve out in the Umpqua NF? Any recommendations?

Wow! I'm green with envy! I'd love to visit the redwoods one day, perhaps with my hammock in tow.
