    Hammock DIY down underquilt

I am starting my DIY down underquilt and wanted to get other people's advise before I start cutting the fabric.

Here is the pattern I am planning on

I am looking to use old jackets as a source of down as seen in my "Down Under Quilt DIY" video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTz9Mz8po_M

I have started collecting the down and purchased the fabric, thread, grosgrain and shock cord.

I'm just looking to see if anyone has any additional advice on this project before I get into the sewing and cutting of the fabric.

I got most of this design from Evan on YouTube (terrarosagear) he seams like a great guy. I asked him about the quilt and the non continuous baffles and he got back to me with in an hour or so.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

With the arched sides I assume you are planning channel suspension. That should be fine but I would not arch the ends. They tend to sag a bit and that may give you air gap problems.

I wonder if a catenary (sp?) cut would work better on the ends? It seems to work well for tarps...

So from what you guys are saying I need to revise the ends in a manner that they pull up closer to the hammock when attached.

    or

Great ideas anyone else on which would work best?

    Thanks

I am not an underquilt user, but from what I've read, the general goal is to hang an insulative layer that presses gently against the bottom of the hammock so as not to lose any loft, in a manner that all edges are pressed against the hammock to prevent drafts. If you search the forum, I think you will find a few different ways to do this.

I had suggested the catenary cut because I know it works well on tarps to keep a taut edge. I don't know that I've ever heard of anyone applying that concept to an underquilt. Perhaps some of the underquilt clan have an opinion on this?

Never considered a cat on the ends. The renown warbonnet yeti has a channel suspension, convexly curved sides (they are not symmetric) and is straight across the ends.

The concave curve on the end might just resist sag. As far as I know it has not been tried.

Theres a fine line between air gaps and compression. If this were to succeed in drawing tension on the inner shell you'd want to be sure you had enough of a differential cut on the outer shell to avoid compression.

    That's ambitious.

Just curious here. If there was a cat cut on the ends, how would you vent the ends if you got hot?
