Congratulations! My first trip relying completely on my hammock will be an overnight hike this Tuesday at South Cumberland State Park in TN. Hope I return convinced as well! Any pics of your setup?
If you had a pict., it didn't come thru.
Congratulations! Love to get off the ground,eh?
Congrats on the successful backpacking trip. And yes, you need to get a hammock.
If you want a good hammock for not a lot of money, check out Grand Trunk.
Great trip report. Glad to see that you chewed all you bit off and didn't bail. That shows some chutzpah.
When I got back into backpacking, I was carrying the 40-50 lbs. of weight, but at least I didn't have to sleep on the ground 'cause I already had a hammock. You will likely get better rest from the hammock.
As for the mileage, it gets easier the more you get out, and the more you reduce your weight. I could barely do 5 miles when I started, but I can do 10 miles a day now without having to go to the emergency room. I hope to get up to 17 or 18 miles a day eventually. That's going to take increased fitness and lower pack weight. It's all part of the fun.
Now ditch that tent and lower your pack weight - no way you should be carrying 40 lbs. for an overnight. However, I admire you for setting such an ambitious mileage goal for your first overnight. Well done!

Nice job and all alone so that means you don't get to share some of the necessities which is tough.

Awesome man.
Reminded me of my first trip which was about 20 years ago - I had too much weight in my pack coz I carried the big heavy version of everything - and half of that I didn't need anyway! Ended up feeling like I was floating every time I took the pack off. Left a pile of stuff with a farmer's wife (which I collected a week later) and boy, what a difference a lighter pack made.
We all serve our apprenticeship by carrying too much, carrying the wrong stuff and planning bigger walks than our bodies can comfortably manage - but we get there in the end... tired and exhilerated! It takes knowledge and know-how (and a few great teachers along the way) to stay safe, comfortable, warm & dry with only a few items in a wee backpack - but have faith and crack on. It's amazing how little we actually need to carry, a lot of the weight we carry is usually made up from carrying "comfort" items. I guess whatever climate we are in determines a lot of what we need.
This is definitely the place to find great teachers - I have learned so much here and in much less time than I would have by trial and error on my own.
It's good that you had a night in a tent first as now you will REALLY appreciate how awesome a hammock is and how huge the gulf is in terms of comfort, weight, speed and ease of set-up etc.
Stick with it and have a blast - just like the rest of us!
Welcome to our world :O)
